Rather than me comment, I think it’s an issue that I think the league will have to take care of.” “… It probably doesn’t matter how I feel about it in general, but the referees are employees of the league. “The big thing is this: You always want to have things that are going to be fair and for your team,” said Predators coach John Hynes when asked about the comments after the game. The NHL can't have the integrity of its games being questioned like that. Based on Peel's comments, people had to wonder if that was on the level. Later Tuesday, the Predators had a goal disallowed on a Red Wings challenge. True or not, anyone – coaches, players, fans – who has ever thought the fix was in during hockey games now has reason to suspect there really is some agenda behind how NHL games are called. Why? The fact we still don’t know that invites wild speculation, none of it pleasant for a major pro sports league. Why would Peel have wanted to penalize the Predators? Was it was just a make-up call? Maybe it was more sinister in terms of dictating the direction – or even the outcome – of a game. He brought up the "context" and "intention" of Peel's words without detailing what those were. ![]() Worst of all, it sounded routine, like it was nothing out of the ordinary in hockey.Īs such, Campbell's virtuously vague statement on behalf of the NHL was insufficent and actually raised questions. Tempting as it might be to shrug off Peel's captured thoughts as no more than an embarrassingly human flub, too many hockey fans are going to remember his ridiculing tone, how he boasted about his desire to disadvantage the Preds for what he even admitted wasn't much of a penalty. ![]() It was a necessary first step, but we can't let the league off the hook so easily. All this did was move his retirement up about a month.ĭistancing itself from Peel publicly as a lone bad actor was an effortless move for the NHL. Peel was essentially fired, yes, but he was already set to retire this season anyway. Good on the NHL for moving quickly to try to defuse an explosive controversy – this took less than 12 hours to play out – but let's not make the punishment out to be more than it was. MATT DUCHENE: Referee Tim Peel 'told our bench' the same thing There is no justification for his comments, no matter the context or his intention." “Tim Peel’s conduct is in direct contradiction to the adherence to that cornerstone principle that we demand of our officials and that our fans, players, coaches and all those associated with our game expect and deserve. “Nothing is more important than ensuring the integrity of our game,” NHL vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said in a statement Wednesday morning. Too bad Private Messaging (PM) is not enabled on this board so we could take this to another room.īB Thank you for the interesting history surrounding Vic and his teaching. It shows that Avery does respect Vic's work and contribution to tennis. So if Avery uses Vic's research and tailors his instruction around it with his own emphasis that is good. Something Vic had little control over since the real estate developer controlled how the marketing dollars were spent and the fact they were really the ones that made Vic famous. But the money to pay for the facilities was in the beginner and intermediate market. It does not mean he didn't teach advanced players. Vic also catered to an audience that was eager to learn to play tennis. If I had the money, I would call vic right now and ask for the rights to his design. I look at the court diagrams and the way things worked and just shake my head not only in sadness (it has really fallen apart) but also in awe. Still to this day, I on occasion go out to Coto de Caza to reminisce the "old days" and have a couple beers sitting in the benches. Even the way ball hoppers were loaded was ingenious. If you have ever seen this facility, you would see a tennis facility way ahead of its time. The fixed wrist, the wrist release, the pronating arm on the serve, the use of the legs in the shot were all researched and documented by Vic. The research provided by Vic is outstanding.Įven today with the new techniques, you still have to hit the ball a certain way to impart different spins. Vic has provided so much research to tennis coaches it does not surprise me that Avery would use some of his stuff or at least tweak it to how Avery wants to say it. It was also about the same time that tennis was losing its market and popularity. When the real estate developer sold the rights to Coto de Caza (I believe to Disney) the Vic Braden Tennis College began to see the writing on the wall. Coto de Caza was one of the most state of the art tennis facilities ever made - even to this day. By doing this the real estate developers agreed to market this facility and him everywhere they could. Vic became famous when he agreed to build his "dream" tennis facility at Coto de Caza. There were a lot of tips surrounding tennis in his day (as they still are) and Vic was one of the pioneers to turn these tips into myths. He could make you laugh while you were learning. However, he did have one characteristic that was worth gold. ![]() There was nothing special about him compared to other coaches. VIc used to be a struggling tennis pro for years. Let me share a little information about Vic Broaden. Hopefully I can settle this before this argument gets out of hand. I agree with drakulie, EASI does have good information for the club tennis player and it doesn't cost much to join. Nothing wrong with that because you will beat 9 out of 10 club players just focusing on Vic's methods and principles! ![]() Vic Braden does have good instructional tapes but they are very fundamental. You have to find out what is right for you because there are several "approaches" to instruction. When instruction comes from well known coaches or even coaches that perform a lot of research, their is nothing wrong with the instruction or methods. That is why some posters above like them and others don't. Not all instruction is right for a person. They have a lot of good instruction in them - if it is right for you.
